M on the Square Cafe and Restaurant

Set within Brackely Town Hall, a restoration of the Grade II* listed building situated within the Brackley Old Town Conservation Area, Haverstock introduced an array of community spaces.

These included a holiday let to provide income, hall spaces and an accessible ground floor commercial unit, transformed into M on the Square, a community café and restaurant at the centre of Brackley’s rich historic centre.

We carefully stripped back players of modern fabric infill to expose a four bay open arcade, historically functioning as ‘Market Place’ where local traders would barter. Haverstock unveiled the historic flagstone floor, iron columns and masonry walls of the original market place.

To conserve this culturally significant space, our work included relaying the historic flagstones over an insulative aggregate breathable sub-base, new mechanical and electrical services, window frame repairs and ceiling works to improve fire and acoustic separation from the Civic Hall above.

To facilitate it’s use as a commercial space, we introduce a free standing pod with WC’s, storage, plant space and open plan kitchen bar space. The unit was conceived as an element for furniture with finely crafted oak cladding fixed over an acoustic absorber.

M on the Square have now taken occupancy and set up a thriving Café Bistro for people to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
